Alcohol and Its Effect on Mental Health

Stress and negative emotions are an integral part of everyday life and are as natural as positive feelings.

Stress can be triggered by unexpected changes in everyday life, the tense atmosphere around, loneliness, inappropriate conditions at home, or at work.

Too much constant stress in the absence of regular relaxation is too exhausting and can lead to serious problems, such as burnout, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, and depression.

Short-term stress reduction, in the long run, does not help

For short-term stress reduction and well-being, some people are used to drinking alcohol.

Alcohol can temporarily dull a negative attitude towards the situation, but at the same time, the strength of its effect gradually decreases over time, and therefore, in order to achieve the same level of sensations, one has to increase its amount. This is due to the effects of alcohol on the brain.

When drinking alcohol, negative consequences begin to take hold – the mood only gets worse, and sleep problems appear.

It is difficult for a person who uses alcohol to find a solution to a situation that provokes the occurrence of stress, and its level continues to grow, which, in turn, is caused by the use of alcohol.

Worries and concerns

Since drinking does not solve the actual problems, they, on the contrary, they accumulate and grow even faster than at the beginning. In this regard, when a person is sober, tension and disturbing thoughts grow.

Depression and negative thoughts

It may seem that alcohol is a convenient way to push away negative thoughts. When alcohol replaces all other uplifting actions, life is slowly becoming more empty and depressing.

Excessive drinking can lead to feelings of guilt and shame, which further increase depression. There is a desire to hide before use from others, trust in relationships suffers.

Sleep disturbance

Although alcohol can speed up the process of falling asleep, the quality of sleep that night will be worse, sleep will be more superficial and intermittent. The next day, fatigue will be even greater.

So a vicious circle may arise – in the evening you fit with alcohol, but the quality of sleep will all fall, and fatigue will increase. Alcohol will gradually bring the nervous system out of balance more and more, sleep disturbance will be aggravated.


Sometimes fatigue due to alcohol is called a “constant hangover”. If your body’s susceptibility to alcohol increases, you may not understand clearly that you have a hangover, but your day will still be sleepy and non-energetic.
